One of the most common questions I get from clients is "Is it ok to mix finishes? Are you sure it will all go together?" My answer is yes, yes, YES! Not only is it ok to mix finishes, to me, its a must. Mixing and layering different tones and finishes is what gives a space interest and dimension. Even if you are wanting to create a soothing monotone space, adding in hints of different metals and finishes gives the space character. Take this room for example, can you spot the mixed metals?
It is a seemingly simple and monotone palette, but if you look closer, you will notice chrome ottomans at the foot of the bed, a gold side table by the chair and bronze lamp bases on the nightstands. Mixing metals doesn't have to be over the top bold and in your face, subtly folding in a few pieces here and there will not over power the space and will make it interesting. On a smaller scale, starting with a few bookcase or countertop décor items is a great way to begin introducing multiple finishes throughout a room or an entire home.
A couple utilitarian items and vintage espresso cups do the trick here by mixing stainless and gold! The key is to not overthink it and sporadically add in items you love. Below are a few additional images for inspiration showing multiple décor styles that use mixed metals. For question or help on mixing it up in your home, visit the contact page and give me a shout!
